Ruturaj Gaikwad Set for India ODI Recall as Virat Kohli Faces Race Against Time for Afghanistan Series

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Virat Kohli in the ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Afghanistan, with the former captain unlikely to recover in time from a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final.

Kohli's injury has raised concerns ahead of India's first ODI assignment following the IPL season. Medical experts have reportedly advised the star batter to take a short break from competitive cricket, making his participation in the Afghanistan series doubtful. As a result, selectors are considering Gaikwad as a direct replacement in the middle order. The Chennai Super Kings captain has strengthened his case for a comeback with consistent performances in domestic and international cricket. Gaikwad was recently drafted into the India A squad after Riyan Parag was ruled out due to injury and remains highly regarded by the selectors. His impressive century during India's ODI tour of South Africa earlier this year has further boosted his credentials.

Gaikwad's potential elevation to the senior squad could trigger changes in the India A setup for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka involving India A, Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. Reports suggest that Rajat Patidar, fresh from leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden IPL title, is being considered as a replacement for Gaikwad. Patidar's leadership qualities and strong IPL campaign have reportedly impressed the selection committee.Meanwhile, concerns also persist over Rohit Sharma's fitness despite his inclusion in the ODI squad. The veteran opener is yet to complete the BCCI's mandatory fitness clearance after recovering from a hamstring injury. Should Rohit fail to meet the required standards, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to be the leading candidate to step into the squad.

With fitness concerns surrounding both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India's selectors could be forced into late changes ahead of the Afghanistan ODI series. While Gaikwad appears poised for a return to the senior side, Patidar and Jaiswal could also benefit from the reshuffle as India finalise their plans for the crucial ODI season ahead.
