Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Mirabai Chanu delivered India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 with a dominant performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event in Glasgow. She set new Games marks in both the snatch and clean and jerk to finish with a total of 190kg.
Chanu opened with an 85kg snatch, which was a Commonwealth and Games record, and followed it with a 105kg clean and jerk, also a Games record. Her combined lift of 190kg gave her a huge winning margin and underlined her status as one of India’s most reliable medal contenders. The win was her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, after title wins in 2018 and 2022. It also added another milestone to a career already highlighted by an Olympic silver medal and multiple major international medals.
Chanu’s victory not only opened India’s gold account at the Glasgow Games but also reinforced her reputation as a record-breaking champion. The performance was both historic and symbolic, coming through on a big stage with India’s medal hopes already focused on her.
