NATO forces were placed on high alert after a wave of Russian drones flew dangerously close to Polish airspace during the night. The incident, which stretched for several hours, prompted fighter jets from member states to scramble in order to monitor and counter any potential violation of Polish territory.
According to officials, the drones were part of a larger offensive targeting sites in Ukraine but posed a serious risk of spillover into NATO territory. Air defense systems tracked the movement of the drones throughout the night, and fighter jets from Poland and allied bases in the region were deployed as a precautionary measure.
Poland, which shares a long border with Ukraine, has frequently raised concerns about the conflict crossing into its territory. This latest episode has renewed calls for stronger air defense coordination among NATO allies stationed along the eastern flank.
Military experts noted that while no drone entered Polish airspace, the rapid mobilization underscored the sensitivity of the situation. Any accidental breach could have escalated tensions significantly, given NATO’s commitment to collective defense under Article 5.
The Polish government said it remains in close contact with NATO leadership and reaffirmed its preparedness to defend its skies. Meanwhile, residents in border areas reported hearing jets flying overhead throughout the night, a stark reminder of the conflict playing out just across the frontier.
