Ananya Lohia , New Chandigarh - India's newest Test cricketer, Manav Suthar, enjoyed a dream start to his international career as he etched his name into the record books during the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh on Monday.
Introduced into the attack by captain Shubman Gill shortly before tea on Day 2, the left-arm spinner wasted little time making an impact. On just the fourth delivery of his Test career, Suthar dismissed Abdul Malik, who top-edged a sweep shot to Mohammed Siraj at backward square leg. The wicket triggered jubilant celebrations from the Indian camp as Suthar claimed a memorable maiden Test scalp. More importantly, the breakthrough saw him become only the eighth Indian bowler to take a wicket in the very first over of his Test debut. The achievement is particularly significant as no Indian had managed the feat since Tinu Yohannan dismissed Marcus Trescothick on debut against England in 2001, ending a 25-year wait for such a rare milestone.
Selected ahead of Harsh Dubey, Suthar justified the team management's faith almost instantly. Having received Test cap No. 319 from Kuldeep Yadav before the match, the young spinner announced his arrival on the biggest stage in style, producing a moment that will be remembered as one of the finest starts to a Test career by an Indian cricketer.
