He died on April 17, 2026, after a prolonged battle with a brain tumor, leaving behind a momunmental legacy in international basketball. Schmidt has an extraordinary international career, representing Brazil for nearly two decades.

Schmidt is not only a international level player but also competed in five Olympics Games( 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996) which shows his longevity and fitness. Schmidt is considered as one of the highest scorers in basketball history, finishing is career with nearly 50,000 points across all competitions. He still holds the all-time leading scorers in Olympic Basketball history. Schmidt was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984, but he decline to play in the NBA, because at that time professional NBA players are not allowed to play international tournament like Olympics.
