Desk Correspondent , Brazil- Brazilian basketball icon Oscar Schmidt, widely regarded as one of the greatest scorers in the history of the basketball, has passed away at the age of 68. He died on April 17, 2026, after a prolonged battle with a brain tumor, leaving behind a momunmental legacy in international basketball. Schmidt has an extraordinary international career, representing Brazil for nearly two decades.
Schmidt is not only a international level player but also competed in five Olympics Games( 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996) which shows his longevity and fitness. His exceptional shooting ability earned him the nickname "Mao Santa" which means (Holy Hand). Over the decades, he became the face of Brazilian basketball, for his scoring constitency and fearless style of play. Schmidt iconic moment was when the 1987 Pan American Games held and he scored 47 points against the United States in the final, leading Brazil to a historic history. Schmidt is considered as one of the highest scorers in basketball history, finishing is career with nearly 50,000 points across all competitions. He still holds the all-time leading scorers in Olympic Basketball history. Schmidt was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in 1984, but he decline to play in the NBA, because at that time professional NBA players are not allowed to play international tournament like Olympics. Schmidt prioritized his country over the NBA career, which only defined his legacy.
Schmidt became a symbol of dedication, loyalty and excellence in global basketball. His decision to stay committed to his national team and his incredible scoring ability made his a legend not only just in Brazil but across all over the world.
