Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was allegedly heckled and sustained a head injury during a violent clash outside the Chanditala police station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Sunday. The incident unfolded when TMC supporters, gathered to submit a memorandum protesting the arrest of party workers, were confronted by opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. A tense crowd waved black flags and chanted "chor" (thief) at the Sreerampore parliamentarian. The situation rapidly deteriorated, forcing a heavy deployment of local police and central security forces to control the escalating chaos. This confrontation comes just a day after fellow senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was reportedly manhandled by a protesting mob during a visit to post-poll violence victims in Sonapur.
Following the confrontation, Banerjee organized a sit-in protest outside the local police station, accusing the police of working at the behest of the state's ruling government. While video footage initially raised questions by showing the MP collapsing to the ground without visible proof of a physical strike, medical examinations later confirmed he was conscious, alert, oriented, and required no hospitalization, noting only a bruise on his chest. TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the ruling party on X, claiming the incident was a planned ambush and that the "BJP is murdering democracy." Conversely, the BJP firmly rejected the allegations, arguing that the demonstration reflected genuine public resentment and accusing Kalyan Banerjee of faking the injury to stage a drama and grab limelight.
"A group of 10-15 people, wearing saffron scarves, attacked me when I was heading towards the protest gathering; one of them threw a stone at me," Kalyan Banerjee stated. He later told reporters, "All this happened in front of the police. I was hit on my head, and I am bleeding." Defending his party, Abhishek Banerjee described the back-to-back incidents as "political violence and state-sponsored terrorism by BJP." Meanwhile, the BJP leadership issued a counter-statement, maintaining that the veteran politician faked his injuries to play the victim card and draw public support.
