Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Assam's flood situation showed signs of improvement on Tuesday as water levels receded in several districts and the number of affected people dropped to 4.45 lakh. However, the disaster continues to impact thousands, with the death toll remaining at 68.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, six districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Jorhat, remain affected, with 631 villages still submerged. Charaideo is the worst-hit district, while over 37,000 hectares of cropland remain underwater. Floods have also damaged roads, schools and homes, with 171 houses completely destroyed and more than 4,600 partially damaged.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing with teams from the SDRF, NDRF and local administration evacuating stranded residents and distributing essential supplies through 184 relief camps. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said power restoration is underway in phases, while Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi urged both the Centre and the state government to strengthen relief efforts and build a long-term flood management system.
Although floodwaters are gradually receding, authorities remain on high alert as thousands continue to await relief and rehabilitation across the affected regions of Assam.
