Ananya Loia , Kolkata - West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of betraying the 1993 martyrs and politicising the annual Shaheed Diwas observance.
Speaking to reporters, Ghosh alleged that the families of the 13 Youth Congress workers killed in the 1993 police firing were denied full compensation, claiming that while courts had ordered ₹25 lakh for each family, they received only ₹2 lakh. He also accused the TMC of turning the Martyrs' Day event into a political programme instead of honouring those who lost their lives.
Meanwhile, the TMC maintained that its annual Martyrs' Day programme would continue as planned at the site of the 1993 firing. The Congress also announced a separate tribute at Shaheed Minar, while the rebel TMC faction planned its own rally, highlighting the growing political divisions within the party ahead of the annual observance.
With multiple groups holding separate programmes and political attacks intensifying, this year's Shaheed Diwas has become a fresh flashpoint in West Bengal's evolving political landscape.
