Ananya Lohia , Kolkata - The stage for the Trinamool Congress's Martyrs' Day programme in Kolkata was allegedly vandalised late Monday night, prompting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and senior party leaders to remain at the venue overnight as preparations continued for Tuesday's annual tribute.
Banerjee alleged that BJP-backed miscreants damaged the stage, tore banners, and disconnected electricity and microphone lines in an attempt to disrupt the event. She also claimed that supporters were being stopped from attending the rally and accused the police of intimidating the families of the 1993 martyrs. The BJP has not responded to these allegations.
Despite the alleged vandalism, the stage was rebuilt by Tuesday morning, with TMC leaders reaffirming that the Martyrs' Day programme would go ahead as scheduled. In a message on X, Banerjee paid tribute to the 13 people killed in the 1993 police firing and said their sacrifice continues to inspire the party's commitment to democracy and justice.
The annual Martyrs' Day observance proceeded amid heightened political tensions, with the alleged vandalism adding to the charged atmosphere surrounding this year's event.
