Ananya Lohia , Patna - A police constable in Bihar's Siwan district has been suspended after a viral video allegedly showed him firing an AK 47 rifle during a student protest. Superintendent of Police Puran Kumar Jha said the constable has been suspended and departmental proceedings have been initiated.
The action follows violent clashes between students and police during statewide protests in Bihar over the weekend. In Siwan, police used tear gas and lathi charge to disperse protesters, while stone pelting was also reported. At least three students were injured, and officials are investigating whether they were hit by police bullets or by gunfire from alleged anti-social elements present during the protest.
The incident has triggered a political storm. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of using excessive force against students, while the Aam Aadmi Party and RJD demanded accountability. BJP MP Sambit Patra rejected the allegations, calling Gandhi's claims misleading and asking him to apologise.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, while the suspension of the constable has intensified the political debate over the handling of the student protests in Bihar.
