Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - Tension gripped the Thakurnagar area in North 24 Parganas after a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers allegedly threatened a local resident, forcing him to remove tiles bearing images of deities from the exterior wall of his house. The incident, which follows closely on the heels of VHP activists ordering the closure of a nearby biryani shop, went viral on social media, sparking widespread concern among locals over the rising intimidation. The resident had reportedly installed the religious tiles at the base of his wall as a common local deterrent to prevent public urination and littering.
According to viral video footage, a group of youth alongside a woman wearing saffron scarves entered the resident's property and aggressively demanded the immediate removal of the images. When the homeowner questioned their authority and requested to see their identity cards, the situation escalated into a verbal and physical assault. The activists reportedly threatened to bulldoze his house, questioned his religious identity, and told him to "go to Pakistan." Local residents have expressed horror over the confrontation, stating that such high-handed dictates are entirely unacceptable in their peaceful community.
Downplaying the severity of the confrontation, Gaighata BJP MLA Subrata Thakur stated that the VHP workers merely objected to the placement of the sacred images, which were allegedly being soiled by drain water and stray animals. He noted that the homeowner has since relocated the tiles higher up on the wall to maintain their sanctity. Meanwhile, the affected homeowner has declined to comment further on the matter due to safety anxieties, while local authorities monitor the fragile situation in the neighborhood.
