Yoga guru and Patanjali founder Baba Ramdev has called on Indians to reduce dependence on multinational brands such as Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and McDonald’s, urging people to adopt local alternatives in response to the US move imposing 50% tariffs on Indian goods.
Speaking after the tariff announcement by the Donald Trump administration, Ramdev described the step as an opportunity for India to strengthen its self-reliance. He said that supporting Indian companies in the food, beverage, and lifestyle sectors would help boost the domestic economy and create jobs.
“The time has come to show the strength of swadeshi (local) products. Instead of foreign soft drinks or fast food, we must encourage Indian brands that benefit farmers and workers directly,” Ramdev stated.
Trade experts noted that while the US tariffs will impact Indian exports, the call for local consumption highlights a growing push toward Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). India currently exports textiles, pharmaceuticals, jewellery, and engineering goods in significant volumes to the US, all of which will be affected by the tariff hike.
Economists have pointed out that while India may look to diversify export markets, domestic consumption can play a crucial role in absorbing shocks from global trade disputes.
The government has yet to issue an official response to Ramdev’s remarks, but industry watchers said such appeals could gain traction among small businesses and consumers seeking affordable Indian alternatives.
