Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Iran has said that a deal with Oman to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is close to being finalised after both countries agreed on coordinates for shipping routes through the strategic waterway. The agreement could restore maritime traffic and help create conditions for wider peace talks between Iran and the United States.

The proposed arrangement would establish designated routes for ships travelling through the strait. Iran and Oman would coordinate the movement of vessels, with the aim of improving maritime safety and reducing the risk of further military confrontation.
Iran wants the agreement to recognise its security and sovereignty interests in the waterway. Tehran is also seeking wider political and economic concessions, including relief from sanctions and greater freedom to export oil.

Oman is pushing for an orderly system based on cooperation between the two countries. It wants shipping routes, maritime services, security arrangements and search and rescue operations to be clearly managed without allowing either side to exercise complete control over the strait. The United States wants the waterway reopened for international commercial shipping. Washington is also looking at the arrangement as a possible first step towards broader negotiations with Iran on the conflict, sanctions and nuclear issues.

The proposed deal is an important diplomatic development, but it is not yet a complete settlement. Its success will depend on whether Iran, Oman and the United States can resolve disagreements over control, sanctions and access while ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels.
