The Election Commission of India has announced that biennial elections will be held on October 24, 2025, to fill four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir. These seats have remained vacant since February 2021 due to the absence of a legislative assembly in the Union Territory, which is required to conduct such elections.
The vacancies arose after the terms of the sitting members expired, and elections could not be held at that time due to the lack of a required electorate. With the constitution of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the necessary electorate is now in place to conduct the biennial elections.
The counting of votes will take place in the evening of October 24, an hour after polling concludes.
This election is significant as it marks the first Rajya Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir since the region's bifurcation into two Union Territories in 2019. The results will determine the representation of Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's Parliament.
