Ranit Kr. Singh , New Delhi — Delhi is set to receive further rainfall today as the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert forecasting cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and strong winds across the capital. This wet spell follows light early-morning showers recorded across several areas, including Palam, Pitampura, and Safdarjung, which have already begun cooling the region. The incoming rain is expected to bring significant relief to residents by pulling daytime temperatures down sharply from Thursday's scorching maximum of 40.5°C. Forecasters expect multiple spells of light rain to continue through the afternoon and persist into Saturday evening before clear skies return next week.
The sudden weather shift has successfully kept both temperatures and air pollution levels under check for the time being. Friday's maximum temperature is projected to hover comfortably between 35°C and 37°C, while the morning's minimum temperature already plunged by nearly four degrees down to 26°C. Meanwhile, the city's air quality managed to remain in the 'moderate' category with an Air Quality Index reading of 148 recorded on Friday morning. This provides a brief respite for the capital, which had previously seen its daily average AQI rise steadily over the first four days of June.
Looking ahead, the weather cooling effect will sustain through the weekend as cloudy skies linger until Sunday and keep the mercury below average. However, a transition toward typical summer heat will begin on Monday, June 8, as the clouds clear out to make way for bright sunshine. The meteorological department predicts that clear skies and strong surface winds of 20 to 30 kmph will dominate the next half of the week. "The maximum temperature is expected to rise again from Tuesday and remain between 39°C and 41°C through Thursday," an IMD official stated.
