The Punjab government has begun the process to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the famous Amritsari Kulcha, aiming to officially recognise it as a unique culinary heritage of the region. Officials said that the move will help preserve the dish’s originality, protect it from imitation, and boost local food tourism.
The GI tag, once approved, will certify that only kulchas prepared in Amritsar with traditional methods can be marketed under this name. Authorities believe this recognition will not only safeguard the legacy of the city’s street food culture but also provide economic benefits to local vendors, dhabas, and restaurants that have kept the dish authentic for generations.
Food experts highlight that Amritsari Kulcha stands out for its crispy texture, spicy potato stuffing, and the customary use of tandoor baking. Served with chole, pickles, and chutneys, the dish has become an identity marker of Punjab’s cuisine. The state government is expected to collaborate with culinary associations and legal experts to prepare the documentation needed for the GI tag application.
Local shopkeepers and food business owners have welcomed the initiative. Many believe that an official recognition will strengthen Amritsar’s position as a global food destination, much like Darjeeling tea or Mysore silk, which already enjoy GI protection in India.
If granted, the GI tag will not only highlight Punjab’s culinary pride but also ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the authentic taste of Amritsari Kulcha without compromise
