Desk Correspondent , Bengaluru - Bengaluru was lashed by intense heavy rainfall and strong winds on Wednesday evening, claiming at least nine lives and exposing critical vulnerabilities in the city's infrastructure. In the deadliest incident, a portion of the compound wall at the historic Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Shivajinagar collapsed, killing seven people—including two or three children and several street vendors and passersby who had sought shelter near the wall amid the downpour. Seven others sustained injuries in the tragedy, with rescue teams from the Fire and Emergency Services working frantically to clear debris. The collapse occurred around the area near the hospital mortuary as relentless rain, accompanied by a rare hailstorm in parts of the city, battered central Bengaluru, dumping around 78 mm of rainfall in a short span and causing widespread flooding and traffic chaos.
Two additional fatalities were reported in separate electrocution incidents linked to the extreme weather, bringing the total death toll to nine. The heavy showers led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, fallen trees, and disrupted power lines, turning routine evening hours into a scene of panic across multiple localities. Authorities, including police and civic officials, rushed to the sites as visuals of mangled debris and rescue operations circulated widely. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, while a probe has been ordered to determine the exact causes behind the wall failure.
The incidents have intensified public outrage over long-standing civic negligence and poor infrastructure maintenance in India's Silicon Valley. Experts and residents have repeatedly highlighted how aging compound walls, inadequate drainage systems, and lax enforcement of building safety norms exacerbate risks during the monsoon season. This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for comprehensive urban resilience measures, including regular structural audits of public buildings and better weather preparedness. As Bengaluru grapples with the aftermath, officials have urged citizens to exercise caution during forecasts of continued thunderstorms, even as questions mount on accountability for preventable urban disasters.
