Kerala health authorities have issued a high alert following the death of a child due to a confirmed Shigella infection , raising concerns about a possible localized outbreak of the bacterial disease in parts of the state. The incident has prompted intensified surveillance, testing, and awareness drives across affected districts.
The infection was identified as shigellosis , a contagious intestinal illness caused by Shigella bacteria. The disease typically spreads through contaminated food, unsafe drinking water, or poor hygiene practices, and can easily pass from person to person in crowded settings. Young children are especially vulnerable due to weaker immunity and higher exposure in schools and community environments.
Following the reported fatality, medical teams have been deployed to trace possible sources of infection and identify additional cases showing symptoms such as severe diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and dehydration. Hospitals in the region have been instructed to maintain readiness for increased admissions and ensure adequate rehydration and antibiotic treatment where required.
Health experts emphasize that most Shigella infections are preventable through basic hygiene measures, including regular handwashing, safe food preparation, and consumption of clean water. Authorities have also urged the public not to panic but to remain cautious and seek immediate medical care if symptoms appear, especially in children.
The Kerala Health Department continues to monitor the situation closely, with further updates expected as investigations progress into the source and spread of the infection.
