Srinagar, August 31, 2025 – Traders and producers in Kashmir have expressed deep concern over the potential loss of a market they describe as “irreplaceable,” warning it could severely impact the region’s economy.
According to local business leaders, restrictions and disruptions in traditional trade routes have created uncertainty for handicrafts, horticulture, and other sectors that rely heavily on exports. The market in question has historically served as a lifeline for Kashmiri products, sustaining thousands of livelihoods across the valley.
Several industry representatives said the absence of this market would shrink opportunities for artisans, fruit growers, and small traders. “It is not just about money; it is about identity and survival,” one trader remarked.
The fear of losing access has already led to falling demand and reduced prices, leaving producers worried about long-term sustainability. Economists cautioned that the loss of such a market could trigger unemployment and erode the competitiveness of Kashmiri products globally.
While the government has suggested exploring alternative markets, local stakeholders argue that replacement will not be easy given the unique scale and reach of the existing one. They have urged authorities to intervene diplomatically and secure trade continuity.
Observers say the outcome of the situation will significantly shape the region’s economic stability and the survival of traditional Kashmiri industries.
