In a landmark move for India’s defence and aerospace sector, French aerospace giant Safran and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have joined hands to develop the country’s first indigenously powered jet engine. The collaboration is being hailed as a breakthrough that could reduce India’s long-standing dependence on foreign engines for its fighter aircraft.
For decades, India has relied on imported technology to power advanced jets, including its flagship Tejas light combat aircraft. Despite significant progress in aircraft design, the absence of a homegrown high-thrust engine has remained a critical gap. The new Safran-DRDO partnership aims to bridge this gap by combining India’s growing technological capabilities with Safran’s proven expertise in aero-engine manufacturing.
According to defence officials, the project will not only enhance India’s self-reliance in critical technology but also create a foundation for future indigenous fighter programs. The engine is expected to power upcoming versions of the Tejas as well as advanced combat aircraft currently in the design phase.
Beyond strategic independence, the collaboration is also projected to bring economic benefits. A large share of the manufacturing will be carried out in India, opening opportunities for domestic industries and creating skilled jobs. This aligns closely with the government’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.
Analysts view the partnership as a game-changer for India’s aerospace ambitions. With the successful development of this jet engine, India would join an elite group of nations with the capability to design and produce combat-grade aero engines.
