Shivani Jaiswal, Lucknow-Electricity consumers across Uttar Pradesh are set to face higher monthly bills after the state electricity regulator approved a 10 percent increase in the fuel surcharge. The decision will impact domestic households, commercial establishments, and industrial units throughout the state.
the fuel surcharge revision has been introduced to help power distribution companies recover rising costs of fuel and electricity procurement. These costs fluctuate depending on market conditions, fuel prices, and the expenses involved in purchasing power from different sources.
The surcharge is an additional component added to regular electricity tariffs and is adjusted periodically based on changes in fuel costs. With the latest increase, consumers will see a noticeable rise in their monthly electricity bills once the new rates are implemented in the upcoming billing cycle.
Power companies have argued that increasing fuel and procurement expenses have put financial pressure on the electricity distribution system. They said the adjustment is necessary to ensure uninterrupted power supply and to maintain operational stability in the sector, especially during periods of high demand.
The decision comes at a time when electricity consumption in Uttar Pradesh is at a peak due to the summer season. Rising temperatures have led to increased use of cooling appliances, further straining the power supply system.
However, consumer groups and business associations have expressed concern over the additional burden. Many have stated that higher electricity costs will affect household budgets as well as increase operational expenses for small businesses and industries.
That steps are being taken to improve efficiency, reduce transmission losses, and ensure better power management. They also emphasized that tariff structures are regularly reviewed to balance consumer interests with the financial health of power utilities.
The revised surcharge is expected to be reflected in bills shortly, leading to higher electricity costs across the state.
