Chennai and several districts in Tamil Nadu are grappling with intense rainfall, leading to widespread disruptions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert as the region braces for more severe weather. In response, schools in Chennai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai have been closed to ensure student safety.
The heavy rains have caused significant waterlogging in several areas, including Villupuram, where bus services were disrupted, leaving passengers stranded. In Chennai's Choolaimedu locality, trees were uprooted due to the downpour, and Thoothukudi city experienced flooding in multiple areas.
The IMD has forecasted that the adverse weather conditions will persist, with the possibility of the depression intensifying into a cyclonic storm. Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities
