Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari hosted a 'Janata Darbar' at the BJP office in Salt Lake on Monday, drawing a massive crowd of citizens eager to voice their grievances. Among the attendees were numerous job aspirants who submitted formal letters to the Chief Minister, expressing optimism that the newly formed government would swiftly resolve long-standing recruitment issues. The protestors highlighted a stark contrast with the previous administration, praising Adhikari for his accessibility and willingness to directly engage with the public.
A prominent contingent of primary and secondary school job seekers demanded a fresh, transparent selection process based strictly on merit. Suman Biswas, convener of the 'Eligible Teachers, Education Workers and Hunger Strikers' Forum, urged the government to publish the OMR sheet results for 22 lakh candidates. Biswas emphasized that despite a prior Supreme Court order, fresh selection has not yet materialized. Pointing out that unemployed candidates face a court-mandated deadline of August 31, the forum requested a formal meeting at Nabanna to discuss legislative solutions for transparent recruitment.
The darbar also drew police job aspirants, who raised concerns regarding exclusionary physical standards for female candidates. Applicant Sushmita Dhara pointed out that while the average height of women in West Bengal is 151.1 centimeters according to census data, the state's police recruitment requires a minimum height of 160 centimeters for sub-inspectors and constables. Aspirants noted this threshold is significantly higher than the central government's 157-centimeter requirement, effectively disqualifying local women from serving in the state, excise, and Kolkata police forces.
