Patna, August 15, 2025 — The conclusion of the month-long Sawan fasting period sparked an extraordinary rush for non-vegetarian food across Bihar, with residents resuming meat consumption after weeks of abstinence.
According to local trade estimates, the state recorded over ₹130 crore in non-veg sales within a single day. Markets in major cities, including Patna and Bhagalpur, were packed as customers queued at mutton and chicken shops from early morning. Vendors reported selling around 10,000 quintals of goat meat and large quantities of chicken, making it one of the busiest trading days of the year for meat sellers.
Shopkeepers said the surge was expected but exceeded previous years’ numbers, with many outlets running out of stock by evening. In Patna’s meat markets, prices remained steady despite the high demand, while in smaller towns, traders reported slight increases due to supply pressure.
Cultural and religious traditions play a major role in this annual spike. Many people in Bihar follow a vegetarian diet during Sawan as part of religious observance, resuming non-vegetarian meals once the period ends. The result is a concentrated burst of purchases and consumption, benefiting local butchers, poultry farmers, and related businesses.
While official data on the total sales volume is not yet available, market observers believe this year’s figures may be among the highest in recent memory, highlighting how seasonal customs directly influence the state’s food economy.
