Pakistan – Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram lauded India’s Jasprit Bumrah as a world-class performer, while brushing aside comparisons between cricketers of different eras.
Speaking on Geo TV’s Haarna Mana Hai show, Akram said Bumrah has established himself as a modern-day great and credited the Indian cricket board for effectively managing his workload. “He is a wonderful bowler… credit to the Indian board for handling him well,” Akram remarked.
When asked about comparisons between himself and Bumrah, Akram dismissed the idea with humour. He used an Urdu proverb, “begano ki shaadi mein Abdullah deewana,” suggesting that such comparisons are unnecessary and irrelevant. “Neither I care, nor does he,” he added, making clear that each player belongs to a different generation with unique challenges and contexts.
Akram further noted, “I was in my era. I did my job. He is in his time, doing his.” His comments underline the respect he holds for Bumrah’s craft while reinforcing the futility of cross-era debates.
Cricket analysts agree that Bumrah’s unorthodox action, ability to generate pace and seam movement, and effectiveness in both new-ball and death overs make him one of the most feared fast bowlers globally. His skills have earned him comparisons with past greats, but Akram’s stance highlights that such debates do little justice to either generation.
The exchange reflects growing appreciation across borders, with Akram’s words adding further weight to Bumrah’s status as one of the premier bowlers in modern cricket.
