A newly inaugurated railway overbridge, constructed at an estimated cost of ₴26 crore , has reportedly developed serious structural damage just days after being opened to the public in Sitamarhi district of Bihar. The incident has raised questions over construction quality, inspection procedures, and accountability in public infrastructure projects.
Local residents first noticed visible cracks and uneven surface patches on the bridge’s approach road and expansion joints earlier this week. Within a short span of time, sections of the surface began to show signs of wear, prompting authorities to restrict heavy vehicle movement as a precautionary measure.
Officials from the district administration have ordered an immediate technical inspection to assess the extent of the damage. Preliminary observations suggest possible issues in material quality and rushed finishing work, though a detailed engineering report is still awaited. The bridge had been recently inaugurated amid public expectations that it would ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region.
Engineers have been deployed to evaluate whether the structure requires temporary closure for repairs or partial reinforcement. Meanwhile, commuters are being diverted to alternate routes, leading to minor traffic delays in surrounding areas.
Public reaction has been sharp, with many residents expressing concern over repeated instances of early infrastructure deterioration in newly completed government projects. Social activists have called for a transparent audit of the construction process and strict action if negligence is found.
The administration has assured that accountability will be fixed after the investigation report is submitted, and corrective measures will be taken to restore safe movement on the bridge.
