The Supreme Court has called on political parties to become more proactive regarding issues raised around the Bihar Socio-Economic and Caste Survey (SIR). During the hearing, the bench observed that there is a matter of “trust” involved, stressing that political representatives must take responsibility in addressing people’s concerns.
The court noted that while petitions have been filed challenging aspects of the survey, it is ultimately for political actors to engage with citizens and provide clarity. The judges underlined that parties cannot remain passive when questions of representation, equality, and trust in governance are at stake.
The Bihar caste survey, conducted earlier this year, has sparked wide-ranging debate, with supporters hailing it as a step toward inclusive policymaking and critics questioning its execution and intent. The data, which includes details on caste, income, and social conditions, is expected to play a major role in shaping future welfare schemes.
By urging parties to “activate” themselves, the Supreme Court has shifted the responsibility back onto the political class, signaling that trust and dialogue with the public are central to resolving the ongoing debate.
