Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Shifting Jantar Mantar Protests

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a PIL seeking an alternative protest venue, arguing that demonstrations at Delhi's Jantar Mantar are causing inconvenience to residents and disrupting essential services.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notices to the Centre and other authorities on the petition, which claims Jantar Mantar is no longer suitable for large-scale protests due to access and movement issues. The court asked the Centre to respond to the plea and consider alternative arrangements for public demonstrations.

During the hearing, the petitioner also referred to a proposed political march and urged authorities to prevent a repeat of previous clashes. While the court declined to comment on the planned protest, it expressed confidence that law enforcement would handle the situation appropriately.

The Supreme Court will hear the matter further after receiving responses from the Centre and other concerned authorities.
