Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Indian Railways has reiterated that cancer patients can avail an Emergency Quota facility for urgent travel to receive medical treatment, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha.

The Emergency Quota allows cancer patients and their attendants to book confirmed reserved tickets through Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Patients must submit a concession certificate issued by a government-recognised hospital or institute. Requests are processed by the nearest Emergency Quota controlling authority, subject to seat availability and document verification.

Under the scheme, 12 berths are reserved in each identified train for cancer patients and their attendants. The quota includes 2 berths each in First Class, AC 2 Tier, AC 3 Tier and AC Chair Car, along with 4 berths in Sleeper Class. The minister also clarified that a separate Emergency Quota exists for High Official Requisition holders and Members of Parliament.

The Emergency Quota aims to ensure timely and hassle-free rail travel for cancer patients requiring urgent medical treatment across the country.
