The Supreme Court has directed stand up comedian Samay Raina to issue an apology after he faced criticism for mocking disabled persons during one of his performances. The court observed that freedom of expression comes with responsibility and that derogatory comments against vulnerable groups cannot be brushed aside as humour.
During the hearing, the bench remarked, “Where will this end,” stressing that making fun of physical disabilities crosses the line of acceptable comedy. The court noted that such remarks not only hurt the dignity of disabled individuals but also reinforce social stigma.
Raina, who is known for his online comedy content and live shows, has been facing backlash on social media over the incident. Disability rights activists have strongly condemned his statements, demanding accountability from public figures with large audiences.
The Supreme Court indicated that while comedians are free to explore satire and critique, mocking a person’s physical condition does not fall under protected speech. The court has asked Raina to issue a public apology to convey regret and ensure such incidents are not repeated.
The matter will be taken up again after the comedian submits his response.
