Parliament Monsoon Session Day 4: Both Houses adjourned amid Opposition protests over NEET row

Swapna Kumbar, Bengaluru - Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day without any business as Opposition protests over the NEET paper leak paralysed proceedings. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Opposition of avoiding a discussion, while Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge repeated the demand for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation.

Rijiju told the Rajya Sabha that the government was ready to begin a discussion immediately and urged Opposition parties not to attach preconditions to it. He said the NEET issue concerns students and should not be turned into a political contest, insisting that the government would participate in a debate under the rules of the House.

The Opposition rejected that position and continued pressing for Pradhan’s resignation before any discussion could begin. Kharge maintained that the minister must take responsibility for the alleged examination irregularities, and the standoff quickly spilled into sloganeering and disruptions in both chambers.

As a result, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were repeatedly adjourned, with no transaction of business during the day. The deadlock has now extended the monsoon session’s opening phase, leaving Parliament unable to move ahead on legislative work.

The day’s washout underlines how sharply the NEET controversy has escalated into a full parliamentary confrontation. Unless the government and Opposition can agree on the terms of debate, more deadlock appears likely in the sessions ahead.
