Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a new financial incentive scheme for women, seen as a significant move ahead of the upcoming state elections. The initiative aims to provide direct monetary support to women from economically weaker backgrounds, focusing on improving household income and encouraging participation in social welfare programmes.
According to the announcement, eligible women will receive financial assistance through direct benefit transfer. The scheme is designed to cover rural as well as urban households, with an emphasis on empowering women to manage their families’ needs independently. Officials stated that the financial support would also complement existing welfare measures, including education scholarships, health insurance, and livelihood schemes already in place for women in the state.
Political observers have linked the timing of the announcement to the approaching polls, noting that women constitute a significant share of the electorate in Bihar. In past elections, targeted welfare programmes for women have played an important role in shaping voting patterns.
Government representatives, however, maintained that the initiative is part of the broader agenda of women’s empowerment and not limited to electoral considerations. They highlighted that similar schemes introduced in earlier terms had contributed to improvements in literacy, maternal health, and financial inclusion across the state.
The new scheme is expected to be rolled out in phases, with guidelines on eligibility and distribution to be released soon. Officials said the government would also monitor its impact on household welfare indicators.
