Mumbai’s monorail services along the 19.54-kilometer Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Saat Rasta) route have been suspended for two months starting September 20, 2025. The suspension, announced by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), comes after a series of repeated technical failures that disrupted services and caused major inconvenience to daily commuters.
In the past month alone, there have been seven major disruptions. On August 19, two trains broke down due to heavy rainfall at Mysore Colony and Antop Hill stations, leaving 1,148 passengers stranded. Similarly, on September 15, another train stalled mid-route during heavy rains, forcing officials to rescue 17 passengers. Authorities stated that night maintenance hours were insufficient to fix persistent issues, prompting the need for a complete shutdown to carry out comprehensive repairs and upgrades.
During this suspension period, the monorail system will undergo major modernization work, including the induction of new train rakes, the implementation of an advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signaling system, and the refurbishment of the existing fleet to improve reliability and safety. These upgrades aim to reduce breakdowns and improve train frequency once services resume.
He shutdown will affect thousands of daily commuters who depend on the monorail for travel across Mumbai Authorities have urged passengers to use alternative modes of transport such as best buses, local trains, and metro services during this period. Officials assured that with round-the-clock work, the system would return with smoother operations and enhanced passenger safety. The suspension, though inconvenient now, is expected to ensure long-term improvements in service quality and reliability once the upgrades are complete.
