Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil declared "we have won" on Tuesday, signalling a potential end to his indefinite hunger strike at Mumbai's Azad Maidan. This breakthrough followed reports that Maharashtra government ministers agreed to his key demands.
Jarange initiated his agitation on 29 August, seeking a 10% quota for the Maratha community in government jobs and education by reclassifying them as Kunbis, an Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. A primary demand, according Kunbi status to Marathas from the Marathwada region, was agreed to, with a Government Resolution (GR) issued for the implementation of the Hyderabad Gazette, which historically recognised many Marathas as Kunbis.
The government also pledged to withdraw criminal cases against protesters and offer compensation and jobs to the families of those who died during the agitation within a week. While a broader GR recognising Marathas and Kunbis as the same community may take two months, Jarange stated he would call off the agitation and leave Mumbai by 9 pm if the formal GRs were issued today. The Bombay High Court, which had initially directed the protest site to be vacated, later permitted Jarange to stay at Azad Maidan until 3 September.
