Ananya Lohia , Delhi - Legendary playback singer S. Janaki, fondly known as the "Nightingale of South India", passed away in Mysuru on Saturday at the age of 88. Her demise has left the Indian music industry in mourning, with leaders and film personalities paying heartfelt tributes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her death as an "irreparable loss" to the world of music and culture, praising her unmatched versatility and timeless melodies. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay also paid tribute, saying her voice had touched generations and that her contribution to Indian music would remain unforgettable. Actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi and producer Boney Kapoor also remembered her remarkable legacy.

S. Janaki began her playback singing career in the late 1950s and went on to sing thousands of songs in over 20 Indian and foreign languages. During her illustrious career spanning more than six decades, she won four National Film Awards and 33 State Film Awards. Her soulful voice and extraordinary artistry earned her a permanent place in the hearts of millions across generations.
