Bengaluru – Continuous rainfall over the past few weeks has severely damaged more than 300 kilometres of roads in Bengaluru, according to civic authorities. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) reported that the downpour caused potholes, cracks, and erosion across key routes, disrupting daily traffic and raising safety concerns.
Officials said the worst-affected stretches are in the Outer Ring Road corridor, Whitefield, and several parts of south Bengaluru. Commuters have complained of longer travel times and increased vehicle damage due to uneven surfaces.
The BBMP has initiated temporary patchwork repairs on critical roads, but officials admitted that permanent restoration will take several weeks once the rains subside. “We are prioritising accident-prone areas first. Full resurfacing will begin once weather conditions improve,” a senior BBMP engineer said.
Local transport unions and resident welfare associations have criticised the civic body, alleging poor drainage management and lack of pre-monsoon preparedness. They have demanded stricter accountability for road quality.
Meteorological officials have forecast continued rainfall for the next few days, potentially slowing repair work. Authorities have urged motorists to drive cautiously and avoid waterlogged roads whenever possible.
The damage is expected to add significantly to the city’s road maintenance budget this year.
