Ananya Lohia , Punjab - India women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has opened up about her close relationship with younger brother Gurjinder Singh Bhullar, describing him as her “first friend” and biggest supporter throughout her cricket journey. Recalling India’s historic ICC Women’s World Cup victory last year, Harmanpreet revealed that the first person she called after lifting the trophy was Gurjinder, fondly known as Garry.
Speaking about the emotional moment, Gurjinder, who now lives in Australia, remembered the video call with his sister. “She called me and said, ‘Garry, hum jeet gaye World Cup,’ with tears of joy running down both our cheeks,” he said. Harmanpreet reflected on their childhood in Moga, Punjab, sharing memories of growing up with a single bat that they both used. “My brother is my first friend and my cheerleader. He always let me bat first,” she said. Even today, despite being one of the world’s leading cricketers, Harmanpreet still turns to her brother for batting advice and honest feedback. He being the youngest always had the privilege to do what he loves and I feel it’s my responsibility to spoil him and give him the best life I always dreamt of.”
The Indian skipper also shared a heartwarming childhood memory of riding her brother on the front of her bicycle while pretending the songs she sang were coming from a “radio” on the cycle. Gurjinder recalled recognising Harmanpreet’s extraordinary talent early on, especially after she smashed 100 runs in just six overs while playing with boys in the neighbourhood. Despite her fierce image on the field, he described her as playful and childlike off it. “She is still a kid. Same laughs, same things make her happy. And she is not as aggressive as she looks on the field,” he said.
