Desk Correspondent , Kolkata - Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified his campaign for the West Bengal Assembly elections on Saturday, launching a scathing dual attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a high-decibel rally in Hoogly, West Bengal. Addressing a massive gathering in the district, Gandhi accused both leaders of prioritizing the interests of the wealthy elite over the poor while engaging in a desperate scramble for political power. He asserted that while the Prime Minister operates at a national level, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief is following a similar "pro-rich" and "family centric" trajectory within the state, leaving the common citizen marginalized.
The Leader of the Opposition emphasized that the "polarization and corruption" allegedly fostered by the TMC government have inadvertently cleared a path for the BJP to gain a foothold in West Bengal. Gandhi argued that a failure to provide clean governance and the reliance on divisive politics have weakened the state's democratic fabric. He framed the ongoing election as a "battle of ideologies," claiming that the Congress-Left alliance is the only credible force capable of protecting West Bengal’s unique culture, language, and constitutional values against what he termed the BJP's "one nation, one language" agenda. Gandhi even alleged Modi to be a puppet of Adani and US president Donald Trump. Even going further to indicate Modi's name being in the Epstein files and selling major project to the Adani Group.
The rally, which saw a significant turnout despite previous reports of administrative hurdles and denied permissions, marks a critical push for the Congress as the state heads toward the second and final phase of polling on April 29. Gandhi concluded his speech by appealing to the electorate to reject "politics of hate and syndicate raj," urging them to vote for a government that focuses on job creation and social justice. Following the Hooghly event, the Congress leader is scheduled to lead further campaign programs at Shaheed Minar in Kolkata and in Metiabruz.
