In 2025, West Bengal's Durga Puja economy reached an estimated ₹65,000 crore, with Kolkata contributing 65%–70% despite challenges like heavy rainfall and consumer caution ahead of the GST 2.0 rollout. Economist Ajitava Raychaudhuri noted an 8%–10% year-on-year growth in economic activity during the festival.
The state's 2,500 Durga Puja committees collectively spent approximately ₹450 crore on idols, decorations, and rituals, benefiting artisans and small businesses. The food and beverage sector experienced a 20%–25% increase in footfall, generating ₹1,200 crore–₹1,500 crore in revenue, with 60% from Kolkata. Kolkata's eight major malls earned ₹900 crore, marking an 8%–10% rise from the previous year.
However, traditional markets like Gariahat and New Market saw a 20% decline due to weather and shifting consumer behavior favoring online shopping. Retailers also faced a slowdown in early September as shoppers awaited GST benefits. Puja sales can constitute up to 25% of annual sales for certain sectors.
