Amruta Fadnavis, social activist and wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, led a beach clean-up drive at Juhu in Mumbai following Ganesh visarjan. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar also joined the initiative, lending support to the campaign aimed at reducing post-festival waste along the coastline.
The clean-up drive was organised after the immersion of idols concluded across Mumbai, leaving large quantities of plastic, flowers, and other waste on the beaches. Volunteers, including students, local residents, and civic workers, participated in the activity alongside Amruta Fadnavis and Akshay Kumar.
Speaking at the event, Amruta Fadnavis stressed the importance of citizen participation in maintaining cleanliness after large public festivals. She said the initiative was meant to encourage people to celebrate traditions while also being mindful of the environment. Akshay Kumar echoed her views, calling for sustainable celebrations and urging Mumbaikars to minimise plastic usage during festivities.
Mumbai has witnessed several such drives after Ganesh visarjan in recent years, with civic authorities often facing challenges in managing the large volume of waste generated. Environmental groups have consistently highlighted the impact of immersion-related debris on marine life and coastal ecosystems.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that clearance operations are underway at multiple immersion points across the city. They welcomed public participation, saying such efforts complement government action and promote long-term awareness.
The event gained attention on social media, with videos of the clean-up being widely shared
