Ananya Lohia , Chennai - Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan has opened to a strong response at the box office but failed to meet the massive expectations surrounding its release, collecting Rs 78 crore worldwide on its first day.
The H. Vinoth directorial earned Rs 41 crore net (Rs 48 crore gross) in India, with packed theatres in Tamil Nadu driving most of its business. However, the film underperformed in other markets, while its Hindi and Telugu dubbed versions contributed only around Rs 3 crore net, limiting its overall domestic collection.
Overseas, Jana Nayagan collected $3.2 million, including a strong $2 million opening in North America, taking its worldwide total to Rs 78 crore. Despite the impressive start, the film missed the projected Rs 100 crore opening and fell behind Vijay's earlier blockbusters like Leo and GOAT, as well as Rajinikanth's Coolie.
Marking Vijay's farewell to cinema before his full-time political career, Jana Nayagan now looks to build on positive word of mouth over the weekend to boost its box office performance.
