Nearly five years after the popular short video app TikTok was banned in India, reports suggest that discussions are underway regarding its possible comeback. The app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, was among several platforms banned in 2020 over security and data privacy concerns.
According to industry insiders, ByteDance has been in touch with Indian partners to explore a potential re-entry, this time with stricter compliance measures and data storage solutions based in India. The company is reportedly considering joint ventures with domestic firms to address regulatory requirements.
TikTok had a massive user base in India before the ban, with millions of creators relying on it for content and income. Its return could reshape the short video space currently dominated by platforms like Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Indian apps such as Moj and Josh.
Government officials have not yet made an official announcement on the matter. However, the growing buzz has sparked speculation among users and creators about the possibility of TikTok reclaiming its place in India’s digital ecosystem.
