New Delhi, August 23 — Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who recently stepped down from captaincy responsibilities at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), is expected to be included in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, according to media reports. The development comes amid speculation about his future in both franchise and international cricket.
Sources suggest that Iyer himself “declined” the offer to continue as captain of KKR, preferring instead to focus on his batting and fitness. The franchise subsequently handed the captaincy reins to Nitish Rana, while Iyer took time off to manage his workload. Reports add that selectors are likely to back Iyer for the Asia Cup, viewing him as a reliable middle-order option.
Iyer, who has been in and out of the team due to recurring injuries, last featured prominently during India’s home season earlier this year. His ability to anchor the innings and provide stability at No. 4 makes him a strong contender for the continental tournament.
A BCCI official quoted in the report said, “The selectors are aware of Iyer’s importance in the batting lineup. As long as he clears the fitness benchmarks, he will be considered.”
Fans have been closely watching Iyer’s career trajectory, especially after debates around his exclusion from some earlier squads. His likely return for the Asia Cup is expected to strengthen India’s batting depth ahead of major tournaments.
The official squad announcement is expected later this week.
