Ananya Lohia , Barbados - The cricketing world is in mourning following the death of West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away at his home in Barbados on Friday at the age of 89. Widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, Sobers leaves behind an unparalleled legacy spanning two decades.
Sir Garfield Sobers represented the West Indies in 93 Test matches between 1954 and 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and claiming 235 wickets. Renowned for his exceptional batting, versatile left-arm bowling and brilliant fielding, Sobers was famously described by Sir Donald Bradman as a "five-in-one cricketer." He also captained the West Indies in 39 Tests, while the ICC's highest individual honour in men's cricket, the Sir Garfield Sobers Award, bears his name.
Sobers rewrote cricket history by scoring 365 against Pakistan in 1958, then the highest individual Test score, and later became the first cricketer to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket. Knighted in 1975 for his services to the game, he was named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Century in 2000.
Paying tribute, Cricket West Indies described him as "the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen. Sir Garfield Sobers' death marks the end of an extraordinary era in cricket. His unmatched achievements, remarkable versatility and lasting influence on the game will continue to inspire generations of cricketers around the world.
