Mumbai - Rajinikanth's highly anticipated film, 'Coolie,' has delivered an "exceptional performance" on its release day, becoming the biggest Tamil opener worldwide. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial, produced by Sun Pictures, premiered on India's 79th Independence Day, 14 August, amidst significant fanfare.
The action thriller grossed a massive ₹151 crore worldwide on its opening day, setting a new record for a Tamil film. Domestically, 'Coolie' outshone its Bollywood competitor, Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR's 'War 2', by raking in ₹65 crore net. 'War 2' secured ₹52.5 crore net on its first day.
'Coolie' registered impressive occupancy rates, with 86.99 percent Tamil occupancy and 92.10 percent Telugu occupancy on premiere day. This strong showing also marks Rajinikanth's biggest opening of his career, surpassing his 2018 film '2.0' which earned ₹60.25 crore. However, early estimates indicate 'Coolie' missed entering the top 10 Indian openers, falling short of Shah Rukh Khan's 'Jawan' (₹75 crore) by ₹8-10 crore, and also failed to surpass director Lokesh Kanagaraj's top opening, 'Leo' (₹66 crore). The film features an ensemble cast including Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shruthi Haasan, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, and Aamir Khan.
