Sydney – Australia’s captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball series against India and New Zealand due to a lower back injury. Cricket Australia confirmed that scans revealed bone stress in his lumbar region, forcing him into a rehabilitation program.
The injury surfaced after the West Indies tour, where Cummins reported persistent soreness. While no fracture has been detected, medical staff advised a rest and recovery period. His absence is seen as a significant blow to Australia’s preparations, especially with the Ashes scheduled later this year in Perth.
Selectors now face the challenge of restructuring the pace attack. Names like Scott Boland and Sean Abbott are being considered as replacements, while Mitchell Starc is expected to take on a heavier workload. The leadership group will also need to adjust its strategies in Cummins’ absence, though officials remain optimistic about his availability for the Ashes opener.
Cricket experts believe Cummins’ withdrawal highlights the increasing strain on fast bowlers who juggle all three formats. His role as captain adds further demands, making workload management critical for Australia’s long-term plans.
Despite the setback, chairman of selectors George Bailey said the team is confident Cummins will return fully fit. The tours to India and New Zealand will now serve as an opportunity for younger bowlers to prove themselves on the international stage.
