Ananya Lohia , Kochi - National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar passed away on Saturday night while undergoing treatment for pneumonia at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 56.

According to family sources, Kumar died at around 10.43 pm after suffering sudden health complications. He was admitted to the hospital earlier in the day and was placed on ventilator support. The actor had undergone a liver transplant several years ago.A celebrated figure in Malayalam cinema, Salim Kumar began his career as a mimicry artist before making his film debut in 1997. He rose to prominence in the 2000s with his memorable comic performances and later earned widespread acclaim for his transition into serious and character-driven roles.Kumar won the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for his performance in Achanurangatha Veedu. He later received both the National Film Award and Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his critically acclaimed role in Adaminte Makan Abu.

Condoling his death, V. D. Satheesan described Kumar as "more than a film star" and recalled his remarkable journey from a humble background to becoming one of Indian cinema's most respected actors. He also noted that Kumar's last public appearance was at a reception organised by the people of North Paravur a few days ago.

Known for his versatility and immense contribution to Malayalam cinema, Salim Kumar enjoyed a career spanning nearly three decades. He is survived by his wife, Sunitha, and their two children. The Malayalam cinema will always going to remember him for his contributions.
