Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - India and Indonesia have sealed a major defence agreement for Jakarta to acquire BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, marking a big step in India’s push to expand defence exports. The deal was finalized during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta and is part of a wider package of agreements between the two countries.
According to reports, the BrahMos package includes a contract for coastal missile batteries, along with supporting infrastructure, training and maintenance assistance. The deal is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime deterrence and deepen strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Jakarta in the Indo-Pacific. Indonesia had earlier entered an agreement in principle to procure the system, and the latest signing moves it into a more concrete acquisition phase.
The agreement is also significant for India because it expands the country’s role as a defence exporter and gives BrahMos another foreign buyer after the Philippines. Reports say the overall package may also include Astra air-to-air missiles and several other pacts covering education, health, technology and strategic cooperation. In broader terms, the deal reflects how both countries are aligning defence ties with their shared interest in a stable and secure maritime region.
The BrahMos deal is one of the biggest outcomes of Modi’s Indonesia visit and a clear win for India’s defence diplomacy. It also signals that Indonesia is ready to invest more seriously in hard security partnerships as tensions in the Indo-Pacific remain high.
