Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - A Russian missile struck the ArcelorMittal steel plant in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, a facility linked to Indian-origin billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Two people were killed and more than a dozen workers and contractors were injured, while parts of the plant’s operations were forced to shutdown.
The attack damaged critical energy infrastructure and facilities connected to the plant’s blast furnaces. ArcelorMittal said the strike disrupted production, and emergency teams were assessing the damage while assisting those injured. The plant is located in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It is one of Ukraine’s largest industrial complexes and a major employer, making the strike significant for both the country’s economy and its steel industry.
SThe missile strike came after Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks of the war against targets across Russia. Russian officials said at least six people were killed in the barrage, which involved hundreds of drones and affected several regions. The exchange of attacks undersores how the war is increasingly reaching major industrial and civilian areas far from the front lines. Repeated strikes on energy, manufacturing and logistics facilities are raising concerns about further damage to both countries’ economies and infrastructure.
The strike on the steel plant highlights the growing civilian and economic cost of the conflict. With Russia and Ukraine continuing to target infrastructure deep inside each other’s territory, the latest escalation has widened the war’s impact well beyond the battlefield.
