Rio de Janeiro, Aug 17 — Fluminense goalkeeper Fábio has equalled English legend Peter Shilton’s record for the most competitive appearances in men’s football history. He reached the milestone of 1,390 official matches during Fluminense’s 2-1 win over Fortaleza in the Brazilian Serie A.
The 44-year-old veteran is currently in his 28th professional season. His long career includes stints at União Bandeirante with 30 appearances, Vasco da Gama with 150, Cruzeiro with 976, and now Fluminense, where he has featured in 234 games.
Speaking after the match, Fábio described the achievement as a blessing. “God gave me this gift,” he told Brazilian media, adding that such records are only possible with the support of family, teammates, and fans. He emphasized that while personal milestones are special, the collective effort of the team remains the most important.
By matching Shilton’s long-standing record, Fábio now stands alongside one of football’s most celebrated goalkeepers. If he plays in Fluminense’s upcoming Copa Sudamericana fixture against América de Cali, he will move past the Englishman to become the sole record holder for most competitive appearances.
Shilton, who retired in 1997, has acknowledged Fábio’s achievement and said he would be proud to see the Brazilian surpass his mark.
Fábio’s consistency, longevity, and leadership continue to inspire younger players in Brazil. As he remains a first-choice goalkeeper for Fluminense, expectations are high that he will soon set a new benchmark in global football history.
